Do you wake up each morning and immediately need to drink a cup of coffee? If you’re not a natural morning person, that’s okay! There is another way to wake up feeling energized, focused, and ready for the day. This method is simple and free; the only thing you need is a little self-motivation! The secret to becoming a morning person is to create a morning ritual.
I was never truly a morning person until I created a routine for myself. Each day I have an alarm set at least half an hour before I actually need to wake up. (This is where the self-motivation comes in, it’s so tempting to stay in bed!) Once I’ve turned off my alarm and gotten up, I immediately begin my morning ritual.
I created my morning routine with purpose; drinking a glass of water helps avoid dehydration and taking the time to stretch is stress-relieving. I’ve already talked previously about how important to-do lists are, and including this at the beginning of my day helps to stay focused. Finally, exercising boosts my metabolism and leaves me energized for the rest of the day!
As you start thinking about what you want your morning ritual to be, keep in mind you’re doing this for yourself. You’ll be waking up before the rest of the world which means you don’t need to respond to your e-mails yet or worry about getting ready for work. Really acknowledge how you want to better yourself and find a way to work this into your routine. Some ideas are meditating, having a cup of tea, watching the sunrise, reading the newspaper, or journaling. Once you figure out how you want to begin your day, starting is simple!
Set your alarm at least five minutes earlier than usual. You might dread this at first, but once you begin feeling the positive effects from your morning ritual, you’ll start to look forward to this! After you get into this habit you can then start waking up 10 or 20 minutes earlier. Before you know it, you’ll be a full-blown morning person!
I understand mornings can be extremely busy and hectic which is why taking the time to start your day right is so important. Find a way to bring positivity into your life from the minute you wake up and it’ll leave you feeling focused and energized all day. With a little determination you can easily become a morning person too!

I hope you eventually find something that works, Lucy!
What a great post! I’m naturally a morning person (though I sleep at nocturnal hours), and I find that being motivated by knowing what to do throughout the day helps a lot!

Thanks, May! I’m glad you agree 🙂
I totally need this, I hate mornings! I might have to replace a cup of tea with a few cups of coffee but going little by little might help
Take it one step at a time and you’ll start liking morning’s much more 🙂
I’m naturally a morning person and almost always wake up before my alarm, but these are great tips. I always grab a cup of hot water with lemon and spend a few minutes reading before jumping into the day!

I’m glad to hear that, Lauren! It’s so important to start your day peacefully, doing something you enjoy rather than immediately rushing off.

Michelle,
I really liked this post because I have diagnosed insomnia. I literally can stay up all night some times or just sleep a couple hours and still get up at my normal time. I still need to go about my day as normal. Because of that, I’m a night owl and sometimes get my best work done at night. I’m going to try some of your suggestions and add them to my morning routine.
